DENITIA AND SENE TAKING THE STAGE
The fall brings us many things. Crisper temperatures, warmer clothing, and in NYC, a plethora of quality live music events. The folks at Heineken After Dark have been curating a superb concert series this season, past shows including the likes of Jesse Boykins III, CharlieRED, and Kris Bowers. The final installment of their RSVP-only series highlighted the talents of Brooklyn-based duo, Denitia and Sene.
I first became familiar with the duo about two years ago when they performed at FREECANDY in Brooklyn for their Heard series, which was basically an invite-only musical event with a secret list of performers. I was captivated by their smooth production, great melodies, and overall chill/sexy vibe. I’ve seen them about twice since then, performing tracks from their debut his and hers EP, so I was excited to see them this time around, showcasing newer tracks.
The show was held at Rough Trade in Williamsburg, a newly opened record shop/live music venue hybrid that is the London-based business’s first US outpost. The space is a bit of a dream for a music geek like me, and I was so excited to take it all in with a bunch of friends, and other familiar faces.
The show opened up with a DJ set by Grumby, filled with mix of throwback hip hop jams, and dancey-remixes of popular tracks. The walls in the main room were lit in a Heineken-bottle shade of green, setting the mood, and staying totally on-brand. Denitia and Sene hit the stage a few moments after 10 PM to an eagerly awaiting crowd.
They performed a solid set with crowd favorites “Because We Are Fools”, “Casanova”, and “Trip.Fall” (which is my JAM, btw), interspersed with newer tracks “Divided”, “Side FX”, and “Runnin” from the forthcoming Side FX project. The futuristic video projection in the background was the perfect visual to pair with the silky harmonic vocal stylings of both Denitia and Sene. Their set length was a good 50 minutes of sexy nighttime grooves delivered in an almost effortless fashion.
The night served as a kick-off to their 2014 Side FX tour, which stops in various locales throughout the United States until Mid-December. I highly recommend you catch Denitia and Sene on tour as their eclectic downtempo musical style is one that I believe in time, will most definitely appeal to the masses.
