ARROJO Underground ’11: The Re-Cap

On the evening of Sunday, November 20th I had the pleasure of attending the Underground presentation at ARROJO Studio. In its ten years of business, ARROJO has become a world renown center for hair and cosmetology education. I was invited by Andrew Arrojo, whom I had met at the past graduate presentation where I received a complete hair makeover (post coming soon!). I jumped at the opportunity to attend, because I’ve been meaning to broaden my reach, topic-wise for the blog, and this came at the perfect time.

This is how Underground began:

Eight years ago an idea to share creative inspiration, new trends and techniques, forecasts for future hairstyles was the genesis of ARROJO Underground. As it evolved, Underground became a symbol of many of the things we believe in: providing our hairdressers a platform for creative expression; being open, inclusive, inspired; and sharing our work with the wider world of fashion.

This was the first hair trend show I had ever attended, so I was really excited to see what was in store. Participants in the show included a diverse group of ARROJO master stylists, salon apprentices, and ARROJO Cosmetology School graduates. Presenting to a packed standing room only crowd, clear trends that I viewed on the runway were texture, varying lengths, and bold color. The ideas were fresh, and at times unapologetic in their approach, but collectively were elements that provided for a inspiring visual spectacle.

Here are some of the looks behind the scenes and on the runway; all photography by David Ducane.

Check out the video below from Fashion News Live. They have a great look behind-the-scenes, along with a great interview with salon founder, Nick Arrojo.
