Melanie Fiona (noun)
An extremely talented R&B/soul singer hailing from Toronto, Ontario, Canada of Guyanese heritage. Known for such hits as “Give It To Me Right” and “It Kills Me”.
Monday night, she performed for fans and industry folks alike at the Summer Music Series presented by Giant Step and Steve Madden Music. The venue, Le Bain at the Standard Hotel, was packed to an extent I had never seen before, and excitement was high. This was my first time seeing her live, after a few missed opportunities, and was all ears.
Miss Fiona performed what I would call, a mini concert, treating attendees to “Give It To Me Right”, “Bang Bang”, “It Kills Me”, “Ay Yo”, and her new single “Gone And Never Coming Back”. Amongst the collection of her own songs, she took a moment out to pay homage to Amy Winehouse, performing an a capella rendition of “Fuck Me Pumps”. The DJ proceeded to play more Amy tracks, including “Valerie”, and the entire crowd sang along; one of my favorite moments in the show.
Another special moment in the show; Melanie performing “Killing Me Softly” a la Lauryn Hill in the Fugees. The night was filled with such great music and people! The party continued with DJ Spinna until the wee hours in the morning, complete with random folks jumping into the hot tub on the roof. A great evening in music indeed!
